When injected into a muscle, the medicine temporarily relaxes the muscle by blocking nerve impulses. As the nerve impulses are blocked the muscle is temporarily unable to contract so that dynamic wrinkles are not formed. This gives the overlying facial skin a softer, smoother and more youthful appearance.
Is the treatment safe?
As a muscle relaxant this treatment has an excellent safety record and a long record of use in medicine. It has been used successfully in adults and children in variety medical conditions over the last 20 years. It has been used cosmetically to treat facial wrinkles for about 15 years and has become one of the most popular and frequently used cosmetic treatments.
Who can have the treatment?
This treatment can be used for treating wrinkles in men and women, however men usually need slightly higher doses than women.
It should not be used in:
People with infection at the proposed injection site.
People who have previously had an allergic reaction to the injections.
People with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles, such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome.
Children under the age of 18 years.
Women who are pregnant or breast feeding.
It should be used cautiously in
(please let the doctor know if the following applies to you)
People at risk of bleeding as there is an increased risk of bruising post procedure. These include people who have blood clotting disorders such as Haemophilia, those who are taking treatments with anticoagulant medicines such as Warfarin, Heparin, Aspirin and Anti-Inflammatory medicines. Certain herbal remedies such as Gingiko Bilboa, St John’s Wort and Vitamin E.
People with excessive weakness or wasting in the muscle to be injected, such as those patients with history of Stroke or Bell’s palsy.
People with chronic breathing problems.
Does the injection hurt?
These injections are relatively painless as the injections are performed using a very fine needle. Patients therefore and do not require any anaesthesia. The full treatment takes about 15-20 minutes to perform and you are able to drive and go to work the same day.
How Long Do The Effects Last?
It can take about 2-14 days to see the full effects after the initial treatment. The cosmetic effects can last up to six months but typically range from three to four months. Eventually most people require re-treatment as the wrinkles reappear. However in some treated areas (such as frown wrinkles), the wrinkles may return less severe after repeated treatments as the unconscious muscle contraction habit is broken. We offer all our patients a free two week follow up appointment to assess the effect of treatment and administer any top up treatments if necessary.
Are there any side effects?
Most people find that the injections cause only mild local pain and tenderness. Immediately after the injection there may be mild swelling at the injection site which usually subsides within 48 hours. Slight bruising is also possible. Side effects of these treatments are extremely rare. Occasionally, the treatment may relax nearby muscle groups causing temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelids. This may last for a few weeks but will resolve with time. As with any medicine an allergic reaction may occur, this is however quite rare. Conversely there may be some unintended benefits in some people such as easing of tension type headaches as the muscles in the forehead relax.
How often can I have treatments?
When the effect of the treatment wears off the wrinkles will always return to their pre treatment state. Treatments can be repeated to a minimum of three monthly intervals, but the effects may last longer for some individuals, especially if they have had previous treatments to the same area.
Will I still have expression in my face?
These treatments are designed to smooth dynamic wrinkles in the forehead and around eyes, they do not affect your resting facial expression. The final result can be tailored to each patient and can be discussed at the initial free consultation.
What after care advice should I follow?
Try to contract the treated muscle areas for up to four hours after treatment, by frowning and lifting eyebrows to allow the toxin to reach all of the treated muscle.
Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas and avoid having facials and massage for 48 hours this is to ensure that the treatment remains at the site of injection.
Avoid vigorous exercise and alcohol for 48 hours.
If bruising develops the you can apply Arnica cream
Paracetamol can be taken for mild pain post procedure
We offer all clients a no obligation free consultation with a doctor.

Our experience
Our doctors have over 20 years experience in lip augmentation procedures and offer a subtle plumping of lips to leave a full-bodied, youthful appearance.
In our experience the vast majority of people are looking for a gentle re-volumisation of lips that may have thinned with passage of time.
We use Juvéderm Ultra Smile, a product that we have achieved excellent results with, and a lip filler that contains a local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort during the procedure. It comes in a 0.55ml syringe and we are careful to make sure the treatment is likely to give a pleasing aesthetic result and that each client's expectations are realistic.
There are two parts of each lip that can be injected - the actual lip BODY and the outer rim, known as the VERMILLION BORDER.
Our doctors and aesthetics co-ordinators will work out, with you, depending on the look you wish to achieve, which parts of the lip would benefit most from treatment and how much lip filler is likely to be needed to achieve the desired result.
Please remember that after treatment there is ALWAYS some swelling of the lips, therefore the lips will initially look bigger than the final result once the swelling has subsided a couple of days later.
Why do lips thin with age?
Over time, the lips' volume and natural connective tissue depletes, leaving a thinner, flatter appearance.
Wrinkles and fine lines compromise their smooth look, and the vermillion borders and Cupid's bow become less defined. Around the mouth, the area between your upper lip and nose can become flattened, and the corners of the mouth may turn downward, creating a tired, aged appearance.
Juvéderm ® ULTRA SMILE provides full, soft, natural looking lips and can be used to smooth fine lines and enhance the mouth area as well as the lips. It is gentle, with an added anaesthetic for the most comfortable treatment experience possible.
Juvéderm ® ULTRA SMILE helps fight the signs of aging, by addressing the lips' texture and smoothness and filling the lines and wrinkles caused by smoking and pursing your lips over time, and by adding volume for a fresh, natural, and reinvigorated look.
The procedure
First, the doctor will take pre-treatment photographs of the lips and will then clean the area to be treated.
Juvéderm ULTRA SMILE is formulated with added lidocaine for added comfort, but the doctor will also choose to use additional topical anaesthetic cream to ensure the most comfortable treatment possible (we use LMX4 cream).
As the anaesthetic takes effect you are likely to feel numbness and a bit of tingling in the area that has been treated—similar to when the dentist numbs your teeth.
The actual treatment takes roughly 15 minutes. The exact injection technique will depend on the type of results you’re hoping to achieve. The doctor may massage the treatment site to make sure the Juvéderm ULTRA SMILE is properly distributed and the results are even.
The doctor may also apply ice to your treatment sites for a few minutes to help minimise swelling, inflammation, and bruising.
How long will the effects of treatment last?
Juvéderm ULTRA SMILE has a unique formulation that’s designed for results that last. In one study, over 78% of those treated maintained the improvement for more than a year after a single treatment!
Are there any side effects?
As with any treatment that involves injections, there are a few minor risks. As with any dermal filler, inflammatory reactions (redness, swelling, etc.), along with irritation or pain upon application of pressure, may occur after the initial injection. These reactions are typically temporary in nature. Lumps or nodules may appear at the injection site and it is very common to be able to feel the "lumpiness" with your tongue even though it is not visible to others. Very rare cases of reversible colouring at the injection area have been reported.
